The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) projects job growth of 6.5% in the field of cosmetology between 2012 and 2022.

Although cosmetologist salaries in Maryland vary widely by region, the average salary was $29,768 statewide as of 2014. Experienced cosmetologists earned $36,155 on average, while those entering the workforce averaged $16,994.

In addition to their formal salaries, cosmetologists generally earn additional income in the form of tips. These can range from 10 to 25% of the bill.

Not only does Baltimore have exceptionally high salaries for cosmetologists, it also had the tenth highest employment level for the occupational classification that includes cosmetologists, hairstylists, and hairdressers as compared to all other metropolitan areas in the country as of 2013.

Maryland’s DLLR reported that Montgomery County had the greatest number of these professionals in the state as of 2013. More than 1,800 cosmetologists, hairdressers, and hairstylists worked in that area. Baltimore County had the second highest level of employment in the state with 1,580 licensed cosmetologists, hairstylists, and hairdressers. Three other areas were home to a high number of professionals in the field:

• Anne Arundel – 1,200
• Susquehanna – 1,140
• Mid-Maryland – 1,110
