Anyone that regularly visits the salon understands that a haircut is more than just a haircut. And finding a compatible cosmetologist is often more about personality than technical skills.
The most successful cosmetologists strive to give customers haircuts that not only look great but more importantly, make them feel great. And while customers certainly appreciate a highly skilled cosmetologist, they frequently seek out one they can forge a personal bond with. As a result, cosmetology is imbedded with aspects of psychology. Today, this emerging concept is being dubbed “Psy-Cosmetology.”
According to the Professional Beauty Association’s Manger of Online Education, Kelley McCarthy, “Psy-Cosmetology addresses a critical need in the education of today’s beauty industry professionals. Beauty professionals must possess the interpersonal skills to effectively relate to and communicate with their clients. Now, more than ever, service providers must capitalize on the time they spend with their clients and convert those connections to sales, additional services and lasting relationships.”
Yet, the idea of Psy-Cosmetology is not a new one. Back in 1980s, a psychologist named Dr. Lew Losoncy conceived the notion of Psy-Cosmetology after one of his patients rejected his advice because her hairdresser disagreed with him. In short, the patient trusted her cosmetologist more than her psychologist.
This epiphany launched Dr. Lew into the exploration of the cosmetologist/client relationship, prompting him to publish the book The New Psy-Cosmetologist in 1985. Now, some 30 years later, Dr. Lew is teaming up with global education director for Psy-Cosmetology Jay Williams to provide workshops and seminars for progressive-thinking stylists all over the country.
Stylists interested in becoming a Psy-Cosmetology professional can attend an upcoming Psy-Cosmetology certification workshop in one of the following locations:
